BEIJING, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. China's Wang Xiyu reaches French Open last 16 for first time
China's Wang Xiyu advanced to the last 16 of the French Open women's singles for the first time in her career with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Ukraine's Yuliia Starodubtseva on May 29.
The 25-year-old Wang is the only player from China to reach the third round of the singles main draw at this year's French Open.
Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen suffered a shock first-round exit, falling 6-4, 6-0 to Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska.
Zheng, who had reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros last year, struggled to find her rhythm against the world No. 114 and was unable to recover after a late collapse in the opening set.
The defeat marks the earliest French Open exit of Zheng's career. The 23-year-old has now competed at Roland Garros five times, and this is the first time she has failed to advance beyond the opening round.
2. 10th China-Russia Youth Games opens in Russia's Kaliningrad
The 10th China-Russia Youth Games opened on May 25 in Svetlogorsk, a coastal city in Russia's Kaliningrad region on the Baltic Sea.
Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory message to mark the opening of the Games.
The inaugural China-Russia Summer Youth Games was held in Tianjin in 2006. Since then, the event has been staged in Chinese cities including Beijing and Shanghai, as well as Russian cities such as Moscow and Penza.
Held across several cities in Kaliningrad, the 10th China-Russia Youth Games runs through May 31.
3. Shanghai edges Zhejiang to take 2-0 lead in CBA Finals
Brandon Goodwin scored a buzzer-beater to help the Shanghai Sharks edge the Zhejiang Lions 91-88 at home on May 28 to take a 2-0 lead in the 2025-26 Chinese Basketball Association best-of-seven finals.
Despite a career-high 50-point explosion from Zhejiang's Barry Brown, his record-breaking night was ultimately spoiled by former NBA guard Goodwin, whose three-pointer lifted Shanghai to victory.
Shanghai had a 101-90 home win in Game 1 on May 26. The next two games will be held on Zhejiang's home court on May 31 and June 2, respectively.
4. Chinese guard Wang Siyu joins Australia's Southside Melbourne Flyers
China national team guard Wang Siyu has signed with Australia's Southside Melbourne Flyers for the 2026-27 Women's National Basketball League season, the club said on May 28, pending league approval.
Wang, known as "Rainy," is one of "Asia's premier basketball talents" and a two-time Olympian, having represented China at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games. She was also instrumental in China's runner-up finish at the 2022 FIBA Women's World Cup, said a WNBL statement.
Wang is expected to represent China at the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup in September.
5. China claims three titles at Malaysia Masters
China wrapped up the 2026 Malaysia Masters with titles in men's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles on May 24.
Li Shifeng delivered a composed performance in the men's singles final, defeating Thailand's Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul 21-16, 21-17 to secure the title.
In women's doubles, Chen Fanshutian and Luo Xumin edged Japan's Sayaka Hirota and Ayako Sakuramoto 21-16, 25-23 in a tightly contested final.
Mixed doubles pair Gao Jiaxuan and Wei Yaxin also lifted the trophy after overcoming Thailand's Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai 21-13, 15-21, 21-11.
